The Homecoming Grand Marshal represents the pride, traditions, and excellence of the University of Iowa and serves as an ambassador of Hawkeye values throughout Homecoming Week.
Selecting a Grand Marshal
The University of Iowa Homecoming Grand Marshal serves as the honorary leader of the Iowa Homecoming celebration.
The position recognizes individuals who exemplify Hawkeye spirit through leadership, service, and a lasting impact on the university and broader community.
Eligibility
Nominees should meet the following criteria:
- Be an alumnus/a, faculty or staff member, community partner, or friend of the University of Iowa.
- Demonstrate a history of engagement, leadership, and service that reflects the mission and values of the university.
- Exhibit Iowa pride and contribute meaningfully to the campus or state community.
Nomination process
1. Call for Nominations
- The University of Iowa Homecoming Council, in partnership with the Office of the President, the Division of Student Life, and the UI Center for Advancement, will open nominations May 17, 2026.
- The call for nominations will be shared via email, social media, and the official Homecoming website.
2. Nomination Form
Nominations must be submitted through the online form.
Each nomination should include:
- Nominee’s name, contact information, and relationship to the University of Iowa.
- Nominator’s name and relationship to the nominee.
- A 300–500 word statement describing how the nominee embodies Hawkeye spirit and contributes to the university or community.
- Supporting materials (résumé or C/V, letters of support, media pieces)
3. Deadline
All nominations must be received by June 17, 2026. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered. Nominations will remain active for two (2) years, so individuals are not required to reapply.
Selection process
1. Review committee
Nominations will be reviewed by the Campus Homecoming Committee made up of representatives from:
- University of Iowa Homecoming Council
- Office of the President
- Division of Student Life
- Intercollegiate Athletics
- UI Center for Advancement
- Undergraduate and graduate student representatives
2. Evaluation criteria
The committee will evaluate nominees based on:
- Demonstrated impact on the University of Iowa or Iowa communities
- Embodiment of Hawkeye values—excellence, integrity, learning, and service
- Leadership and engagement within or beyond the university
- Positive representation of the Iowa spirit
3. Final selection
The Homecoming Council will recommend a finalist to the Vice President for Student Life and President and CEO of the University of Iowa Center for Advancement for approval.
Expectations of the Grand Marshal
The selected Grand Marshal will:
- Lead the University of Iowa Homecoming Parade.
- Participate in a hosted lecture.
- Be recognized during the football game.
- Participate in select Homecoming events (pep rally, alumni receptions, and other official programs).
- Deliver brief remarks at designated events, as requested.
- Serve as an ambassador of Hawkeye pride and tradition throughout Homecoming Week.
